Our adventure in Italy began at 5 am at the “Francisco Sã Carneiro” airport. At 10:40 in the morning we landed in Pisa and we were most surprised by the high temperatures that were already felt at that time (33ºC). The city of Pisa, known worldwide for its famous Leaning Tower and its squares, has been involved in environmental sustainability initiatives.
Pisa has invested in infrastructure to promote more sustainable modes of transport, such as bike lanes to encourage the use of bicycles as a means of transport, as well as improving public transport with electric and hybrid buses. The preservation and increase of green spaces are priorities in the city has several parks and green areas that help improve air quality. In this context, we visited the Botanical Garden of the University of Pisa, known in Italian as “Orto Botanico dell’Università di Pisa”, which is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world and an important center for botanical research and education. As part of the University of Pisa, the garden serves as an important center for research and education. The Botanical Garden plays a crucial role in the conservation of biodiversity. He participates in programs for the conservation of endangered plants, in addition to collaborating with other international institutions in preservation projects. The garden is also open to the public and offers various educational activities, such as guided tours, workshops, and exhibitions, which help to raise awareness about the importance of plants and nature conservation. The garden is yet another example of how botanical gardens can be integrated into sustainable tourism strategies, offering visitors an educational and conservation experience while exploring Pisa’s rich history and biodiversity.
